What was happening

A note of the Austro-Hungarian Bank — a single central bank serving two states, which printed the same note in German on one side and Hungarian on the other, and listed the denomination in the monarchy's other languages down the margin.

Issued in January 1913, eighteen months before the war that destroyed the state that issued it. After 1918 the successor republics overstamped these notes to mark them as theirs, and what had been one currency became eight.
