Symbology

Tryzub (trident)
The trident of Volodymyr the Great, adopted in 1918 as the arms of the Ukrainian State - reaching past the Russian Empire to a tenth-century Kyivan precedent.
Narbut's ornament
Heorhiy Narbut's folk-derived borders and lettering, a deliberate visual break from Russian imperial style. The typography is itself the argument.

What was happening

Money of the Ukrainian State — Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi's government, installed with German backing in April 1918 and gone by December when the Germans withdrew.

The karbovanets was Ukraine's assertion of monetary independence, and the notes are strikingly designed: the trident, folk ornament and a deliberate visual break from Russian imperial style, largely by the artist Heorhiy Narbut. They circulated alongside Russian imperial roubles, which the notes themselves acknowledge — they circulate on a par with credit notes.

This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 10 Karbovantsiv, Ukrainian State, 1918 in the collection.
