Symbology
- Portrait of Lenin
- The same three-quarter head, on the last Soviet series, printed as the union dissolved.
- Soviet arms
- Hammer and sickle crossed over a globe in a wreath of wheat, with a rising sun behind - industry and agriculture, the world as the field of action, and the sunrise of a new order. It replaced the eagle entirely rather than editing it.
- Denomination in the union languages
- Repeated once for each union republic, so the number of languages on a Soviet note records how many republics the union claimed at the time of printing.
What was happening
A Gosbank note of the very last Soviet series, printed as the union dissolved. The design is unchanged from the 1961 reform — Lenin, the state arms, the denomination in fifteen languages — but the money behind it was already failing. The Pavlov reform of January 1991 withdrew high denominations at two days' notice; by 1992 the rouble was in free fall and the USSR did not exist.
