Symbology

Amelungsborn
The Cistercian abbey of Amelungsborn, founded in 1135, a few kilometres from Eschershausen. One of the oldest monastic foundations in the Brunswick country.
Crosses and mountains
The Weserbergland as a sacred landscape, linking the monastery to the Raabe quotation.
"Die Berge sind den Göttern heilig"
"The mountains are holy to the gods." From Wilhelm Raabe's *Nach dem großen Kriege* (1861). Raabe (1831–1910), born in Eschershausen, was one of Germany's foremost realist novelists. Here the Weserbergland mountains are cast as a place of permanence and the sacred, set against the ruins of war.

What was happening

The 25 Pfennig denomination from Eschershausen. The front shares the same layout as the 10 Pfennig: Wilhelm Raabe's birthplace and the Eschershausen panorama.

The back shows views of the nearby Amelungsborn Abbey and the wooded hills of the Weserbergland, with crosses against a radiant sky and a quote from Raabe's Nach dem großen Kriege: "Die Berge sind den Göttern heilig." ("The mountains are holy to the gods.")

Issued 1 June 1921, valid until 1 July. Signed by Elsner, with artist monogram F.J.
