What was happening
The 1 Mark value of Eschershausen's Wilhelm Raabe series, the note that puts the writer himself on the money. The common front carries Raabe's birthplace, the Eschershausen panorama and the Raabe tower and monument.
The back is a framed portrait bust of Wilhelm Raabe (1831–1910), the town's famous son, set among the attributes of authorship — a lyre and a scroll — with banners sounding the theme of lasting fame (Ruhm … wird … gedacht). Issued 1 June 1921, valid until 1 July 1922, signed by Elsner. It is the top value of the set alongside the 2 Mark ([[notgeld-eschershausen-2-mark]]); see also the 50 Pfennig ([[notgeld-eschershausen-50-pfennig]]).
This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 1 Mark, Eschershausen in Braunschweig, 1921 in the collection.
