Church or town building with a star

Validity to 31 December 1921
The note states it is good for money transactions within the municipality until 31 December 1921 - emergency money designed from the outset to lapse.

What was happening

Reutergeld was Mecklenburg's own version of the Notgeld collector craze. Around 1921 a number of Mecklenburg towns issued Serienscheine whose texts quoted the Low-German (Plattdeutsch) poet Fritz Reuter (1810-1874), the region's most beloved writer, born at Stavenhagen. The Stiftung Mecklenburg describes Reutergeld as a purely collectible issue without real payment function, spreading Reuter's dialect lines as a piece of regional self-advertisement and early tourism promotion.

This is the 10 Pfennig of the Stadt Gadebusch, the small value of the town's Reutergeld pair with the [[notgeld-gadebusch-reutergeld-25-pfennig]]. It is valid for local transactions until 31 December 1921 and signed by the Rat der Stadt. One face carries the value and a Low-German Reuter verse (beginning Et is't nu einmal in de Welt ...); the pictorial face shows a church or town building with a star and the heading Reutergeld - Stadt Gadebusch.

Gadebusch is a small town in western Mecklenburg-Schwerin, best remembered for the Battle of Gadebusch (Wakenstädt) of December 1712, Sweden's last great victory on German soil in the Great Northern War.

This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 10 Pfennig, Stadt Gadebusch, 1921 (Reutergeld) in the collection.
