What was happening

This 500-rouble note is one of the architecture-themed family that Belarus issued dated "2000," the series that followed the redenomination striking three zeros from the hyperinflated rouble. Like its fellows it names no person, taking its imagery instead from a landmark of the capital.

The face shows the Republican Palace of Culture of the Trade Unions in Minsk, a grand colonnaded post-war building on the city's central square, crowned by a pedimental sculptural group of allegorical figures representing labour and the arts. The back carries a detail of the building's facade, keeping the whole note within a single monumental subject.

Printed by Goznak in Moscow and secured with a windowed thread, the note bears no officials' signatures. It remained in use through the 2000s until the 2016 redenomination retired the 2000 series; the denomination was formally demonetised in the following years.
