2 Reichsmark, Reichskreditkassen
Reichskreditkassenschein — Zwei Reichsmark
What was happening
A Reichskreditkassenschein — occupation currency issued by the German military administration and legal tender only in the territories the Wehrmacht held. German forces were paid in these notes and spent them locally, and the occupied country's own central bank was obliged to redeem them, so the occupation financed itself out of the occupied economy.
The 2 Reichsmark is one of the low-value workhorses of the series, undated (circulated from about 1940), with an ornamental guilloche face rather than a portrait. It was used across Poland, France, the Low Countries, the Balkans and the occupied Soviet territories.
