50 Reichsmark, Reichskreditkassen
Reichskreditkassenschein — Fünfzig Reichsmark
What was happening
A Reichskreditkassenschein, the top value of the German occupation currency, legal tender only in the territories the Wehrmacht held. Undated, issued from 1939.
The face carries a portrait of a woman in a headscarf in the German Renaissance manner; the back shows the Marienburg (Malbork), the great castle of the Teutonic Order, then in occupied Poland — a pointed choice of imagery for money that financed the occupation of the East. Part of the Reichskreditkassen series with the 1, 2, 5 and 20 Reichsmark notes ([[germany-1-reichsmark-reichskreditkassen]], [[germany-2-reichsmark-reichskreditkassen]], [[germany-5-reichsmark-reichskreditkassen]], [[germany-20-reichsmark-reichskreditkassen]]).
