Sepuluh Sen — Bank Indonesia

common Pick 92

What was happening

A small fractional note of Sukarno's Indonesia, one sen being one-hundredth of a rupiah. It belongs to the 1964 "sen" series that Bank Indonesia issued in the last turbulent years of Guided Democracy, with the country gripped by runaway inflation and mobilised for the Konfrontasi against the new Federation of Malaysia. Within a year the money was overtaken by events: in December 1965 the rupiah was redenominated a thousand to one, and these little notes were swept away almost as soon as they appeared.

The face carries a female volunteer (sukarelawati) in a military cap, an image of the civilian volunteers — women among them — whom Sukarno called up for the West Irian and Malaysia campaigns, with the words SEPULUH SEN ("ten sen") across the note. It was printed domestically at P.N. Pertjetakan Kebajoran, the state printing works in Jakarta that struck much of the era's money. The reverse is a plain guilloche field carrying the denomination. The note is signed by Bank Indonesia Governor T. Jusuf Muda Dalam and Director Hertatijanto.
