50 Pfennig, Stadt Freiburg in Schlesien, 1921 (castle entrance)
Notgeld der Stadt Freiburg i. Schles.
What was happening
By 1921 Notgeld had turned from wartime necessity into a collectors' market. Towns, firms and clubs commissioned lithographed Serienscheine - sets printed far beyond local need and illustrated with whatever a place was proud of.
Freiburg in Schlesien - today Świebodzice in south-western Poland - is a small Lower Silesian cloth and weaving town below the wooded heights of Schloss Fürstenstein (Książ), the great castle of the Hochberg family. The town's 50-Pfennig notes share a common front showing the two-towered town skyline with Stadt Freiburg i. Schles. / Fünfzig Pfennig / Der Magistrat; each back carries a different scene and a motto. The set was printed by Grube & Schneider of Freiburg in September 1921, and its sister notes are [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-fuerstenstein]], [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-burghof]] and [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-tal]].
The back of this note shows a castle entrance captioned Eingang alte Burg ("entrance of the old castle") under the motto Den allersonnigsten Sonnenschein ("the very sunniest sunshine"), one of a sequence of mottoes that run across the four 50-Pfennig backs.
