50 Pfennig, Stadt Freiburg in Schlesien, 1921 (castle courtyard)
Notgeld der Stadt Freiburg i. Schles.
What was happening
By 1921 Notgeld had turned from wartime necessity into a collectors' market. Towns, firms and clubs commissioned lithographed Serienscheine - sets printed far beyond local need and illustrated with whatever a place was proud of.
Freiburg in Schlesien - today Świebodzice in south-western Poland - is a small Lower Silesian cloth and weaving town below Schloss Fürstenstein (Książ), the castle of the Hochberg family. Its 50-Pfennig notes share a front showing the two-towered town skyline with Stadt Freiburg i. Schles. / Fünfzig Pfennig / Der Magistrat, while each back carries a scene with a motto. The set was printed by Grube & Schneider of Freiburg in September 1921.
The back of this note shows an old castle courtyard captioned Alte Burg - Burghof under the motto Wer lange sitzt muß rosten ("he who sits too long will rust"). Its sister notes are [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-burg-eingang]], [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-fuerstenstein]] and [[notgeld-freiburg-schlesien-50-pfennig-tal]].
