10 Pfennig, Gemeinde Klütz in Mecklenburg, 1921 (Reutergeld)
Reutergeld Klütz
What was happening
Reutergeld was Mecklenburg's own version of the Notgeld collector craze. Around 1921 a number of Mecklenburg towns issued Serienscheine whose texts quoted the Low-German (Plattdeutsch) poet Fritz Reuter (1810-1874), the region's most beloved writer, born at Stavenhagen. The Stiftung Mecklenburg describes Reutergeld as a purely collectible issue without real payment function, spreading Reuter's dialect lines as a piece of regional self-advertisement and early tourism promotion.
This is the 10 Pfennig of the Gemeinde Klütz, the small value of the town's Reutergeld pair with the [[notgeld-kluetz-reutergeld-25-pfennig]]; the town's plainer 1922 note is [[notgeld-kluetz-50-pfennig]]. It was issued by the Gemeindevorstand Klütz i. Meckl. and good within the parish until 31 May 1922. The pictorial face, labelled Reutergeld Klütz - 10 Pfg, shows an owl on a branch at night; the other face is a craftsman's interior scene beneath a Plattdeutsch Reuter verse.
Klütz is a small town in the Klützer Winkel of north-west Mecklenburg, near the Baltic coast between Wismar and Lübeck - a corner of country tied to Mecklenburg's literary life, from Fritz Reuter's dialect world to the later "Jerichow" of the novelist Uwe Johnson.
