25 Pfennig, Gemeinde Klütz in Mecklenburg, 1921 (Reutergeld)
Reutergeld Klütz
What was happening
Reutergeld was Mecklenburg's own version of the Notgeld collector craze. Around 1921 a number of Mecklenburg towns issued Serienscheine whose texts quoted the Low-German (Plattdeutsch) poet Fritz Reuter (1810-1874), the region's most beloved writer, born at Stavenhagen. The Stiftung Mecklenburg describes Reutergeld as a purely collectible issue without real payment function, spreading Reuter's dialect lines as a piece of regional self-advertisement and early tourism promotion.
This is the 25 Pfennig of the Gemeinde Klütz, issued by the Gemeindevorstand Klütz i. Meckl. around 1921 and good within the parish until 31 May 1922. The pictorial face, labelled Reutergeld Klütz - 25 Pfennig, shows a church among trees in blue; the other face is an interior scene with figures beneath a Plattdeutsch Reuter verse. The companion small value is [[notgeld-kluetz-reutergeld-10-pfennig]], and the town's plainer 1922 note is [[notgeld-kluetz-50-pfennig]].
Klütz is a small town in the Klützer Winkel of north-west Mecklenburg, near the Baltic coast between Wismar and Lübeck. It sits at the heart of a corner of country tied to Mecklenburg's literary life - Fritz Reuter's dialect world, and later the "Jerichow" of the novelist Uwe Johnson - which makes the choice of Reutergeld especially fitting for the place.
