75 Pfennig, Stadt Rudolstadt, 1921 (Markt mit neuem Rathaus)

Notgeld Rudolstadt — Schiller-Stätten

common Grabowski/Mehl 1146.2

What was happening

Rudolstadt, the residence town of the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt beneath the Heidecksburg, was central to Friedrich Schiller's life. He spent the summer of 1788 nearby and courted the von Lengefeld sisters at their house in the town — he married Charlotte von Lengefeld in 1790 — and it was in Rudolstadt, on 7 September 1788, that Schiller and Goethe first met in person.

This 75 Pfennig note belongs to the town's Schiller-Stätten ("Schiller places") series, issued by the Stadtrat on 16 August 1921 and printed by Lorsch & Nachbar of Rudolstadt. The common front carries the Schwarzburg lion and two bells — the bells of Schiller's Lied von der Glocke — flanking the value and the serial. The back of this variety is captioned Markt mit neuem Rathaus, the market square with the new town hall, set beneath lines from the Glocke.
