What was happening
Money of the Ukrainian People's Republic, the nationalist government that held Kyiv intermittently between 1917 and 1921 while fighting the Bolsheviks, the Whites, Poland and briefly Germany.
The hryvnia notes carry a gold clause — one hryvnia contains 8.712 dolya of pure gold — from a republic that never controlled a gold reserve. Their design, much of it by Narbut, is among the finest of the period: Ukrainian folk motifs and a deliberately modern typography, an argument about nationhood conducted in ornament.
