2 Bolívares — Banco Central de Venezuela

very common Pick 101 José Félix Ribas

What was happening

A relic of collapse. By 2018 Venezuelan hyperinflation had made the bolívar fuerte unusable, and on 20 August 2018 the government introduced the bolívar soberano ("sovereign bolívar"), lopping five zeros off the old unit — one new bolívar for 100,000 old. It was the second redenomination in a decade; the bolívar fuerte of 2008 had already struck off three.

This 2 Bolívares note, dated 15 January 2018, is among the smallest values of that new series. The face carries a portrait of General José Félix Ribas (1775–1815), a hero of the independence war, with the national arms; the back shows a yellow-shouldered Amazon parrot in the landscape of Morrocoy National Park. The redenomination did nothing to arrest the inflation, and notes like this were worthless within months of issue.
