Counterfeiters are subject to deprivation of all rights of estate and exile to penal labour — the standard clause on the reverse of imperial state credit notes, printed beneath the two large numerals
Symbology
- Double-headed eagle, crowned
- The Romanov arms in full: two crowned heads under a third imperial crown, holding orb and sceptre, with St George slaying the dragon on the breast shield. The two heads face east and west - a claim, inherited from Byzantium, to authority over both.
- Guilloche
- The dense interlaced line-work filling the field. Engine-turned on a geometric lathe, it was the era's principal anti-counterfeiting device: reproducible only with the same machine and impossible to draw freehand or photograph cleanly.
- Gold-standard wording in an ornamental cartouche
- The redemption promise is given its own decorative frame rather than being set as small print. On a note designed to advertise convertibility, the promise is the ornament.
What was happening
The series date is the story. 1905 was the year of Bloody Sunday, the naval mutinies, the general strike, and the October Manifesto that forced Nicholas II to concede a Duma — the year the autocracy came closest to falling before it actually did. The state was simultaneously fighting and losing a war against Japan, and paying for both the war and the settlement with foreign borrowing.
The note itself is markedly plainer than the 50: no portrait, symmetrical guilloche, smaller format. That is deliberate. This was the workhorse small denomination, designed to be printed cheaply in vast numbers and to circulate hand to hand until it fell apart. Where the 50 roubles was a store of value that people put away, the 3 roubles was money that got used — which is why worn examples vastly outnumber crisp ones.
Its later life is the more interesting part. The plate outlived the state that cut it. The Provisional Government kept printing from the imperial designs in 1917, and so did the Bolsheviks after October: the RSFSR ran tsarist plates well into 1918–19 because it had no alternative and because the public would accept them. So a small green three-rouble note of "1905" is an object that passed through an imperial collapse, a provisional republic and a revolution without its design changing at all.
A practical note for anyone cataloguing a run of these: the manager's signature is worth ten times the paper it sits on. The Timashev variety runs about $20 in VG and $100 in UNC against $2 and $15 for Shipov. Check every copy.
