Symbology

Schwarzburg lion and bells
The lion of the Schwarzburg princes whose residence Rudolstadt was, with the bells of Schiller's *Das Lied von der Glocke* ("The Song of the Bell") — the thread running through the whole series.
"Schillers Wohnung 1788"
Schiller's lodging in Rudolstadt during the summer of 1788, when he courted Charlotte von Lengefeld and first met Goethe in the town.

What was happening

A second note of Rudolstadt's Schiller-Stätten ("Schiller places") series, issued by the Stadtrat on 16 August 1921. It shares the common front with the rest of the set — the Schwarzburg lion and the two bells of Schiller's Lied von der Glocke — and differs only in the scene on the back.

Here the back is captioned Schillers Wohnung 1788: the house where the young Schiller lodged during the summer of 1788 he spent in and around Rudolstadt, the summer he courted Charlotte von Lengefeld and first met Goethe. A woman stands before the house beneath further lines from the Glocke. See also the Markt mit neuem Rathaus variety, [[notgeld-rudolstadt-75-pfennig-rathaus]].
