Inscriptions

Obverse — the dedication

"Sein Nein war Nein gewichtig, Sein Ja war Ja vollmächtig, Seines Ja war er gedächtig, Sein Grund, sein Mund einträchtig, Sein Wort, das war sein Siegel." (Dem Vater des Ministers Freiherrn vom und zum Stein gewidmet.)

Verse praising a man true to his word, dedicated to the father of Minister Freiherr vom und zum Stein, whose family tomb stands in Frücht.

Symbology

Arms of Frücht
The quartered shield of the commune, with a horse crest, carried on all three values of the series.
Stein and Arndt dedications
The village celebrates its two patriotic associations: the reformer Freiherr vom Stein, buried here, and his collaborator the writer Ernst Moritz Arndt.

What was happening

Frücht is a tiny village near Bad Ems, in what was then Prussian Hesse-Nassau. Its claim on history is a grave: Heinrich Friedrich Karl Reichsfreiherr vom und zum Stein (1757–1831), the Prussian reform minister of peasant emancipation and municipal self-government, is buried here, in the neo-Gothic Steinsche Kapelle. The village's Notgeld makes the most of the connection.

This 25 Pfennig note carries the Frücht arms and lines dedicated to Stein's father: "Sein Nein war Nein gewichtig, / Sein Ja war Ja vollmächtig … Sein Wort, das war sein Siegel." The other values of the set quote the Rhineland nationalist writer Ernst Moritz Arndt (1769–1860), Stein's close collaborator in the Wars of Liberation, and the Stein monument at Nassau. Dated Frücht, 1 January 1922, signed by the Bürgermeister, and printed by Hartmann of Coblenz. See also [[notgeld-fruecht-50-pfennig]] and [[notgeld-fruecht-75-pfennig]].
