Symbology

Eagle with tricolour
The German imperial eagle with the black-white-red flag of the Kaiserreich, a common patriotic motif on 1920s Notgeld.
"Wir wollen keine Dänen sein"
"We don't want to be Danes" — a political statement about the Schleswig question, despite Steinfeld being in Oldenburg rather than Schleswig-Holstein.

What was happening

A different series from Steinfeld (Oldenburg), more boldly patriotic. The front shows a large eagle clutching the broken black-white-red tricolour of the Kaiserreich, flanked by two large "1 MARK" numerals in ornate red. The text around the border reads Wir wollen keine Dä... nen sein / Wir wollen keine Da... nen sein — a patriotic refusal in the context of the Schleswig plebiscite, though Steinfeld is in Oldenburg, far from the Danish border.

Valid until 30 November 1921. Same signatories as the coat of arms series.

This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 1 Mark, Gemeinde Steinfeld (Oldenburg), 1921 (Eagle series) in the collection.
