What was happening

Five million dinara, dated 1993 — and still not the end. The face shows Karađorđe Petrović (1768–1817), "Black George," leader of the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans in 1804 and founder of the Karađorđević dynasty; the back shows an Orthodox church.

By the time this note was printed the Yugoslav inflation was approaching its peak: in January 1994 prices were doubling roughly every day and a half, and the National Bank issued a 500,000,000,000-dinara note before the currency was finally scrapped. Putting the founder of the dynasty on a five-million-dinara note was a gesture of continuity on money that had none.

This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 5000000 Dinara, FR Yugoslavia, 1993 in the collection.
