Symbology

Volodymyr the Great
Grand Prince of Kyiv who Christianised Kievan Rus in 988; shown on the obverse and in the watermark as a founder-figure of Ukrainian statehood.
Town of Volodymyr in Kyiv
The ancient fortified heart of Kyiv raised by Prince Volodymyr, "Град Володимира у Києві," depicted in reconstruction on the reverse.

What was happening

Ukraine adopted the hryvnia in September 1996, retiring the inflation-ruined karbovanets and reviving the name of the money of medieval Kyivan Rus. The 1-hryvnia note honours Prince Volodymyr the Great (Volodymyr Sviatoslavych, Saint Volodymyr), the grand prince of Kyiv who in 988 adopted Christianity and baptised the Rus. This 2006 series is a full redesign of the earlier 1-hryvnia notes, put into circulation by the National Bank of Ukraine on 22 May 2006, with the prince on the obverse and his likeness repeated in the watermark.

The reverse shows the reconstructed ruins of the ancient fortified town of Volodymyr in Kyiv — "Град Володимира у Києві" — the earliest walled core of the capital, raised by the prince himself. The notes are struck by the Banknote Printing and Minting Works of the National Bank of Ukraine, the bank's own printworks established in 1994, so Ukraine makes its own money. Each note is signed by the ГОЛОВА (Governor) of the National Bank; the 2006 type first carried Volodymyr Stelmakh's signature, and later print runs keeping the 2006 date bear the signatures of the governors who followed him.

This account belongs to the type, not this copy — it is shared by every 1 Hryvnia, National Bank of Ukraine, 2006 series in the collection.
