What was happening

The opening of the great inflation. When Yugoslavia broke apart in 1991–92, the rump Federal Republic of Serbia and Montenegro inherited the dinar and the war that destroyed it. Hyperinflation set in through 1992 and became, by early 1994, one of the most severe episodes ever recorded.

This 1000 dinara, dated 1992 and still a serious sum when printed, carries Nikola Tesla (1856–1943) on the face and one of his high-frequency transformers — a Tesla coil throwing sparks — on the back. Within two years the National Bank would be printing notes of 500 billion dinara ([[yugoslavia-5000-dinara-1992]], [[yugoslavia-100000-dinara-1993]]).
